Until 1975, the Department of Private Law was an integral part of the Legal Department of the Institute of Administration established in 1958 by the Northern Regional Government. The then Legal Department trained students to become lawyers, which training was eventually concluded in any of the Inns of Courts in England. This Legal Department later became Faculty of Law of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria with two Departments - Department of Private Law and the Department of Public Law in 1962. This makes the Department one of the pioneer Department of the Faculty and one of the oldest in the country. Since inception, the Department has participated in producing prominent lawyers, judges and professors of law both locally and internationally
To advance the frontiers of learning and break new grounds in the areas of contract law, equity and trust, private international law, property law, computational and competition law through teaching and research and dissemination of knowledge of highest quality; to produce seasoned and qualified man power capable of widening the horizon of private law practice in Nigeria and the world at large.
